.

Many who seek pain relief for leg problems are surprised that the pain originates in the back. We are hoping we can help get rid of some of the mystery behind sciatica and its treatment.

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the body's longest nerve. It connects the foot, leg, and buttocks to the spinal column. If there is any damage or pinching of this nerve, pain can occur anywhere along the path of the nerve. That is why sciatica can cause pain in any of the areas and is often confusing to the person seeking pain relief. Most often, it is simply a matter of the sciatic nerve being pinched in some way.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

In rarer cases, sciatica appears as lower back pain. In most cases, however, there is a sharp pain, tingling, or numbness that appears in the buttocks and radiates down the affected leg and into the foot. Some bouts can last for weeks at a time and then seem to disappear. Unfortunately, sciatica, once it appears, tends to flare up again after a time.

What causes sciatica?

Most cases of sciatica occur because age causes deterioration in the spine, which causes a shifting of spinal elements. When this shift occurs, the vertebra can press on the sciatic nerve or the nerve could get caught between two spinal parts.

How can chiropractic treatment help sciatica?

Pain relief treatment can consist of heat or cold treatment, massage, and a realignment of the spinal column. With gentle manipulation, often a combination of heat and massage can alleviate the pain.
